The Hidden Power of Storytelling: Why Your Business Needs a Podcast

After years of helping business owners build their brands through podcasting, I’ve learned one thing above all: Your story is your superpower.

Podcasting Isn’t Just Marketing—It’s Meaningful Connection

When people come to me asking how to measure podcast success, they almost always mention numbers first. Download stats, chart rankings, follower counts. I’m the first to tell them: “Stop looking at the numbers.” Vanity metrics aren’t why I fell in love with this medium.

What I care about—and what I want for my clients—is impact. Did someone reach out because your episode resonated? Did a listener email to tell you they felt understood, inspired, or excited after tuning in? THAT is the data that matters most to me.

Tell Stories, Don’t Pitch Products

People don’t press play to hear an ad. They tune in for stories that move them, teach them, or make them feel less alone. A podcast is first and foremost a storytelling platform, not a marketing tool. But when you do it right—when you show up with a strategy and a message—it becomes one of the most powerful brand-building tools out there, and it never needs to feel salesy or forced.

My Approach: Your Why Comes First

When a new client wants to launch a podcast, we never start with “what’s your story?” (because you have dozens!)—we start with “why.” Why did you choose your business? What lights you up? What do you hope listeners will walk away with? I love figuring this out with you, then helping you find the micro-stories and everyday moments that support your bigger message.

You don’t need a dramatic, life-changing story. My first “viral” story was about a regrettable tattoo. It’s the little, relatable details that people connect with most.

Progress, Not Perfection

For most new podcasters, episode one will feel awkward and overly scripted. Good. I want you to be embarrassed when you re-listen to that first episode after reaching number 100. Podcasting is one of the few things where you can literally listen to your own growth—and your audience will grow with you.

The Only Promise You Need

Every episode should deliver on a unique listening promise. What’s in it for your audience? Why should they hit play next time? My work with clients includes unearthing and refining that promise, then making sure it’s woven through everything we create together.

Forget Downloads—Focus on Impact

My favorite “metrics” are the ones you can’t measure with a spreadsheet. If a listener is moved to take action, to share your episode with a friend, or to simply reply and say “this mattered”… that’s ROI worth celebrating. Numbers are fleeting. Real connection endures.
